  Then it was an own brand Palm that was if anything worse then the original (which had moved on in the meantime)

  The other factor which folks didn't touch on is that by Apple having HP sell rebranded iPods, Apple puts iPods in more stores. My local Fred Meyer (Kroger grocery store) has the HP iPods. More shelf space is likely to equal more sales.

  absolutely right...now that costco is selling the HP model as well (for $30 less), i'm sure it will have greater impact...but it begs the question...why didn't Apple ever go the more retail route?
