• msnbc mobile: 50 pixels wasted

i'm all for advertising your brand, etc.  but when it impacts my ability to use an application/website, it makes me mad.

take msnbc mobile for example...50 vertical pixels wasted:

    winmob1

a huge banner ad for windows mobile.  here's my questions:

    1. shouldn't the site know i'm already using windows mobile?
    2. shouldn't it know my device capabilities and realize that they just wasted my screen space
    3. what would msnbc publishers think that i can't even see the top headline...

this site has turned from a news site to a banner ad...hey anyone on msnbc listening?

I know you are not as big as MSNBC, and they should be able to filter their ad's based on the device, but before critisizing other's - look at your own site design...huge banner on top, huge strip of ads below that, and only the bottom 20% of the screen (on 800x600, 66% on my highest resulotion) is the content on a computer. A mobile user will not even see that.
I guess desigining for mobile users is in its infancy, and I hope we will see improvements on that in the future.

ishai: not exactly a comparison as my site 1) is not designed for mobile content, nor do i pretend it ever will be and 2) the home page is still VERY visible 'above the fold' regardless of the banners. the msnbc site that is shown here is the MOBILE msnbc site designed for mobile...it isn't their same site. my point being that if you are DESIGNING for mobile than you need to take things under consideration.

The Windows Mobile banner cracks me up. The technology ball got dropped there. Doh! It should know the platform. I betcha the advertiser cares.

Regarding the wasted pixels I betcha MSNBC doesn't care about you. They just see the short $$ and forget about the long term user retention.

You got a Dash? Schweet! I looked at those a while back and I'm ready to pull the triger...the day I can justify the cost :) Currently I use my phones very little.
