in my daily work i spend a majority of my 'computing' time in outlook. communicating with peers, team members, customers, etc. is mostly done via communication (sad, i know). a lot of that time it involves sending information attachments back and forth, using office documents, etc. i've said a lot about how much i love the preview functionality within vista and office 2007. i even wrote a code preview handler for .cs, .vb, .sql, .js files.

one of the samples in the msdn article by stephen toub was for pdf files...of which i receive a lot. i don't use adobe reader because i think it is overkill for reading pdf's personally. the sample, however, relies on having adobe reader installed...which i didn't like. i started working with the foxit activex sdk, because i love their reader product. after some communication with the team at foxit, we started collaborating.

as a result of that collaboration, foxit software and i partnered to create the 'foxit pdf preview handler' which you can download for free! this is a pdf preview handler for outlook 2007 and windows vista. the current version requires vista, but we are working on a windows xp version for outlook 2007 on winxp. what this enables you to do is, well...the following:

Foxit PDF Preview Handler

no need for adobe to be installed, etc. it's fast, it's furious.

there is no official foxit support included for this add-on, but i'm happy to field questions/suggestions myself. keep in mind, i'm not going to be (nor will they) altering the pdf renderer...that's their product. if you need pdf rendering capabilities within your application, i highly suggest looking at foxit integrations using their dll and activex sdk's for your applications. they are a great company with a great team. it's a global team and they were very responsive throughout our communication. i really appreciated their willingness to collaborate on something so simple and helpful to the greater community. please give them a look-over.

why the 'banner' in the pdf render? well, it's free :-). that only shows up there as well...won't be in the printed document or anything...i think it is great to give them credit and a simple, small, unobtrusive banner is entirely appropriate.

wonderful read, but i don't get it running. i installed the package, and also rebooted. but nothing changed in my outlook.

vista german, office 2007 german.

any idea?

sepp: have you received a PDF attachment and clicked on it? then allowed the preview? any errors? outlook won't really 'change' but attachments will have a preview option

I got an error message!
It won't display the PDF file,
it only says that an error ocurred with
the previewer.

no, there is no preview option.

if i have an email containing an pdf attachement, and i double click the attachement the options are open, save or cancel.

sepp: double-clicking will still OPEN the document. In outlook 2007, if you simply click on the attachment icon in the message pane it should present an option for a preview (see image above). if you have Windows XP though (you didn't answer) this will not work with this program right now...it was designed for Vista only.

I can't get it to run at all under Windows 2003 R2 running Citrix Metaframe Presentation Server 4.0 and Outlook 2007. I installed the previewer first, restarted Outlook and no go. So then I loaded Foxit 2.0, and restarted Outlook - no good. Finally I did a repair on the previewer and still no go. The error is "This file cannot be previewed because of an error with teh following previewer: Foxit PDF Preview Handler"

dcolpitts: as was mentioned numerous times, this previewer works in Vista, only, due to its reliance on code that only Vista has.

here's another nudge for a WinXP/2003 version. ;)

seth: yep, that is a good one, but just note it requires you to have acrobat reader installed before it will work.

Works well as Windows Explorer previewer in Vista. How about rendering the image as thumbnails for Vista icons? Now I still get just the default PDF icon, not a thumbnail. Grrrrr.

I cant get this previewer to work. I installed it, and even rebooted the machine.
When I click on pdf, it prompts me with "PREVIEW FILE" option, but when I click on it, it error out

I'm getting an error messagr when I install Foxit PDF Preview Handler, which is: "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with the package. The error code is 2869"

Love the previewer - it was working well in Vista Business /Office07 but now the fonts all display in Cyrillic. Any ideas?

it appears that Adobe now has a previewer. However, I like the Foxit one better. Does anyone know how to make sure Foxit is used rather than the Adobe previewer?

DavidWW: only one handler can handle a file type...that doesn't sound right, but basically only one handler will be able to be associated with PDF...basically, last one to associate wins. you can use stephen's tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/toub/archive/2006/12/14/preview-handler-association-editor.aspx to edit the association of file types to registered handlers.

My Outlook freezes when I delete the message during the preview.
I do not know what is causing the error, but the handler works great otherwise. Please let me know when you have more on this error.

i tried using the Foxit previewer- absolutely brilliant piece of software!
however after i reinstalled my XP recently and also reinstalled the Foxit plugin it does not work and gives me an error message:
this file cannot be previewed because of an error with the following previewer

please could anyone help- i use this feature every day and without it i am lost.

I installed the software on a vista 64 bit machine. I find it much fast than Adobe, but the preview function isn't working in Explorer or Outlook.

What could the problem be?

Foxt Reader is separate than this PDF previewer. If you want the PDF preivew capabilities, make sure you install this previewer (which doesn't require the Reader to exist)

Bob: it should...you have to enable the preview pane. i've had no reports of it not working under vista 64.

Are you also working on Thumbnail view in Foxit reader? Is there a way out here? This feature would be as useful when reading a file and comes handy when you need to visually searh through it.

Hello! Thanks a lot for the handler! This is very useful on Vista x64 where Adobe's PDF reader doesn't support this functionality yet. One minor inconvenience I encountered was that it keeps displaying the bookmarks pane and I am unable to disable it permanently. Is there any way to hide the bookmarks pane permanently?

Only a few requests/suggestions.

1. When previewing and i click the magnifing glass to zoom into an area, I cannot unselect the magnifing glass (Eg. A hand or arrow cursor/icon).

2. There is no text select option. Sometimes i just want to preview the PDF and select one line of text out of it without having to open the whole thing.

If those could be added, everything about this tool would be perfect.

Great product! I handle the adverts for our local community paper – all in .pdfs. As they are a range of different dimensions, it’s important for me to sort them by size so I can send batches of the same size to the editor. Previously I had to import them into Photoshop to see all the files in one folder had the same dimensions.

Just one question: is it possible to customise the settings and have them remembered? For example, I’d like to remove some of the icons from the toolbar, and also to set Foxit PDF Preview Handler always to open up previews at 100%/Actual Size.

tom: Thunderbird?!!? :-) -- I have no idea what Thunderbird's API is or even supports. Preview Handlers are a feature of Office 2007 and Windows Vista...which this targets...nothing more.

I used the original pdf previewer from Ryan Gregg. It somehow went away a month ago. I like yours however it keeps crashing my Outlook. When I try to switch from viewing a pdf to another email, Outlook crashes.

I've tried 8.1 & 9 Adobe but it says no previewer enabled. Yours is so much better, but crashes every 5 mins are getting time consuming. Do you have a suggestion? I have already uninstalled and reinstalled several times.

Nice work, love the XP version.

Only complaint is a very large "space" between the email subject and Fox it PDF viewer, mainly where the Foxit software creditability is noted. Waste of space and doesnt leave you much of the PDF viewer to see unless you have high resolution(mine is maxed out but still low due to restraint of graphic card) or you move your message preview bar up covering more of the inbox pane.

Again great work tho!

I have a slightly different use to most people and I have a problem. Under XP I used a combination of Windows Desktop Search and Foxit to search and view my 'digital library' of 12,000 academic research papers. WDS seemed to have a PDF preview that worked without add-ons. I recently upgraded to Vista and WDS is now built-into to Vista, but the PDF preview with Foxit no longer works and so I looked around and found your add-on. Your tool restored the ability to preview most PDF docs in the Vista search interface. Except there are a significant set of PDF documents that display blank pages. The text is there - just not visible. I can't work out what is different about these PDFs. For example all the PDF documents delivered by the JSTOR archive fall into this category. I can provide an example file.

OK, I've installed this twice on my Vista 64 Bit & Office 2007 system and it doesn't want to know - even after a reboot. I have an email with a .pdf attachment and when I open the viewer pane, Outlook informs that "the file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it". I do not have Adobe Reader installed but I do use PDF-XChange Viewer as my main .pdf viewer.

Any suggestions please.

Hi Tim, nope, no errors at all. The program seems to install as normal but doesn't do anything in Outlook. I've just checked the Application Event logs and one entry (ID 11707) says "Product: Foxit PDF Preview Handler -- Installation completed successfully". while another entry (ID 1033) says "Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Foxit PDF Preview Handler. Product Version: 1.0.0. Product Language: 1033. Installation success or error status: 0."

Would the folder that the handler is installed to make any difference? As you are probably aware, Vista 64 uses different "Program Files" folders for 32 & 64 bit programs. Also, for the first install I did, I removed the 'Tim Heuer' portion of the installation path, but left it in for the second attempt. Are there any other settings that need to be made (file associations etc)?

The only other thing I can think of is that it may need to be installed with Administrator rights but the installer .msi file doesn't give me that option when right clicking.

REB it does need to be installed as admin (you can elevate a command prompt and then type msiexec /i path-to-the-msi-file). Also make sure you get the latest version (1.1) instead of 1.0 which can be obtained here timheuer.s3.amazonaws.com/...wHandlerSetup_1_1.msi

i use foxit on my vista 64bit machine to preview pdf's. i use windows search on my xp machine(s) to preview pdf's. i scan documents using paperport and save them as pdf's. they can be previewed on my xp machines but not on my vista machine. i can open the files with foxit and view them that way. i don't understand why it won't preview in the vista explorer preview pane.

ed this previewer has nothing to do with the Foxit Reader software install. They are independent of one another. If you only have Foxit Reader installed on your Vista machine and are not getting PDF previews in Outlook or Explorer, then install this preview handler as well.

Hey I had a lot of problems but I was finally able to fix it. This is how I fixed the This file cannot be previewed because of an error withe the following: Foxit PDF Preview Handler.

Basically, I did not have to clear a cache, or temp file. It took a while but I uninstalled Foxit AND Adobe 8. I installed Adobe 9 and went in to Outlook's Trust Center (located in tools) and unclicked anything to do with Adobe in the Attachment handling tab. Then I installed FoxIt again and Foxit works.

Tim,
I have been using the Foxit PDF Previewer for over a year with Outlook 2007 and Vista. Suddenly, it stopped working, with Outlook giving the message for PDF Files: "This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it." I then went into the Trust Center Attachment Handler to make sure that the PDF previewer was enabled. It was. Then I thought I would attempt to uninstall and reinstall the previewer, so I exited Outlook and attempted to uninstall the previewer from Add/Remove Programs. When I did so, after the uninstall worked for awhile, I get a blank message box with an OK button. When I click OK, the uninstall rewinds. Any advice?

Hi, I'm running Foxit PDF Preview Handler since a couple of months. All of a sudden it stopped working. I checked if it was enabled in Trust center attachment handling and it was. Then I de- and reinstalled the add-in. But still I receive the message that the file cannot be reviewd because there is no previewer installed for it. In the Task-Manager the proces is still running but there is no conection to Outlook I guess. Any suggestions?
NB. My idea was that the automatic update of adobe reader 9.1 may be cause of this situation, could that be?

Knuty -- I don't know if Adobe reader updates the registry to their previewer, but you could verify. When you attempt to preview what happens? error? does it still say Foxit PDF Previewer?

Works great in vista64 but I have a question about temp files it creates. I have limited space on C: boot drive and I noticed full sized temporary files are being created in Local temp folder for everytime viewed. Example 5 views equal 5 full temp files created. Outside of cleaning them out all the time is there another solution to get rid of this bulk? thanks.

GS -- it should work fine even with UAC (you have to install it as admin, but it should prompt you to elevate privileges). I've had it running on Vista x64 for a long while. If you aren't getting prompted to run as admin, then when installing, elevate a command prompt and run: msiexec /i <path to msi>

I have Vista Ultimate with Croatian lip pack and it doesn't work. Does anyone have an idea why? I even shut down that anyoing UAC, and all the same it does not work.

This is a great little addon. I didnt want to install adobe just so i could preview, did a google and got here. Thank you for all your creative work.
Running under both xp tablet edition *basically xp pro* and vista ultimate x64

Tim - I just bought a new PC with Vista and have efax which the documents are sent to me in pdf format via email. I've never had a problem being able to open them before in XP - it was getting very frustrating to have to save the file then go to Adobe and open the file there...thanks so much for this add-on. Saves valuable time!

Hi,

It works great with previewing attached PDF files in the Email window, but it does not work in Windows Desktop Search 4.0 preview (on Windows XP).

Any ideas about the WDS problem?

Igal -- WDS is a different preview technology than Outlook 2007 on Windows XP. You can install the Foxit PDF IFilter from their site and I'm not sure if that solves that.

I've installed the previewer, and it works great for previewing PDFs, but when I try to navigate away from the message, Outlook freezes every time. I have to close outlook and restart.

I'm using Office 2007 and WinXP.

Hi Tim, always onto the new toys and I notice that there are copies of Office 2010 Technical Preview starting to float around although the TP isn't officially released until July. I have to say after giving it a good hard workout for a few days I'm very impressed with Office 2010, haven't noticed any bugs yet, and love some of the new outlook features like the conversation view. All positive except for not being able to use your extremely handy PDF previewer so I'm back to having to open the PDF's ;-) Don't ya love a challenge ;-) :-)

Hi Tim,

Regarding using this within the WDS Preview pane: it actaully DOES work fine (after I have fixed minor issues in the code). No need to install the IFilter for Foxit for PDF.
Just wanted to update you about that.
