some interesting news in php land

while i'm off galavanting in the aspen trees, some of my counterparts are up in san francisco attending zendcon, a php conference.

some updates on some news that microsoft is announcing at zendcon...

    • FastCGI for PHP -- this was a collaborative project between zend and microsoft to build a better fastcgi implementation for windows.  announced today will be that zend will be redistributing FastCGI in Zend Core.  additionally, zend will make sure that FastCGI is supported in the server core installation option for windows server 2008!
    • zend and microsoft partnered again to provide a component for the zend framework for php developers/apps to make use of supporting information cards for identity integration.
    • finally, microsoft is making available a first preview build of a sql server 2005 driver for php.  this is designed to enable php developers to have a reliable and scalable driver for sql server.

so php developers, what do you think?

That is sweet! We could always access Microsoft SQL Server via the TDS/MSSQL plugin, but I think this will allow for faster and more compatible integration. I once had a company that wanted an app that could do MySQL & MSSQL with PHP on Apache for a Novell server. It was impossible at the time without a Linux machine to bridge the gap. Sounds like all of these technologies will be OS-independent and all play nice together.

This is really great news. Is fastCGI actually better performing than ISAPI? Do you know more about this?

I'm thinking most PHP developers are thinking, they could be using Ruby instead. :)

Seriously, this is great news from Microsoft to support a well known/used open platform in a space where they compete. Keep the announcements flowing!

Microsoft gets a lot of flak from people, painted as the Evil Empire. I often try t stick up for, to encourage a more rational view, but now I give up.

It's hard to stand by a company that is actively encouraging people to use PHP.

Such a shame. Looks like Redmond is the home of Great Satan after all.

    :)

So this is what Microsoft is thinking with Facebook in mind. I was wondering why they would be supporting a company that didn't really utilize Microsoft technology.
