So you've announced for the West, and I've seen Chris Koenig's announcement for Texas, but is there any sort of centralized list for all the national events? (I'm interested in Minneapolis in particular)

I already have Visual Studio 2008 installed and my closest install-fest is sold-out.

It'd be nice if there were an online version of this for those who can't make it due to distance or sold-out events.

I have a question on the following:

we're providing a location, install dvd's (these will be evals because the finals aren't pressed yet), and food/drinks.

So we would receive an eval copy of Visual Studio 2008? If that's true, I'm sorry, but that doesn't really sound like much of an incentive to attend. Am I missing something?

scottha: international would depend on the varying countries. i am a part of a US team and our team is doing this for the US...unfortunately i can't speak for other countries

sean: at the installfest you'll get a 90-day trial that will come with a license code to get the full version. since it just came out we don't have "real" dvds completed yet to ship (it just rtm'd a week ago), but participating in this event essentially gives you access to a licensed not-for-resale copy shipped to you when those production dvds are completed. the eval is a full-featured version of vs2008, so there is no functionality loss and will last you long enough until you get the real copy (which at that time then you can just re-enter a key code to refresh your bits -- no full re-install necessary)

From what I understand all of these events will give you VS 2008 if you install the day of the event on a laptop. At least the KC one said they would send it to you at a later date from what I understand if you were on of the people who installed. Probably the reason that some places do not have this event is either due to an MS Branch in there area or there User Group did not set it up in time. The people in KC had to do it at least a month in advance.

Yes - saw announcement from my user group what seems like a 'day after' - local Minneapolis Fest FULL. Emailed someone in the 'know' - and he said it had filled in 15 minutes - Did some company with 150 employees have each sign up the instant announced? 15 minutes? Not fair. I signed up and am driving to another state... not fair - not FREE.

    Hi Tim,

thanks for posting the list. I just went to the InstallFest in the detroit area... it was a really great event. I do have one concern though, I went to install the VS2008 Trial and it said that the digital signature could not be verified and that a certain cab file was corrupt. Will this be a problem when I enter my registration code for the full version or should the full version work? I was able to install my brothers version of the trial on my PC

I'm running the Indianapolis event tomorrow night. For our area, the Micosoft office determined which cities and groups would participate. Limited budgets and limited copies of the software meant they couldn't do it everywhere, even though I believe they would have liked to.

As was noted in previous comments. When you are giving away expensive software, registration to the event goes very very fast. Our event took a little longer than 2 hours to fill to capacity, but not much.

Someone asked about other events. In our area it has been stated that there will be other opportunties to get the software. DevCares events (DevCares.com) might have them. Other events might have small quantities as well. Microsoft is good at giving out software. If there are other opportunities, chances are the local user group will hear about them.

One hint for anyone going--the framework installation can eat up anwhere from 30-50 minutes of the total installtion. You can save a lot of time by installing an Express SKU the night before. My entire installation was under an hour since I already had the framework installed. There were a couple of guys pushing 2.5 hrs for their installation.
