Geek sounds, a classic keyboard

My new team does a lot of video conferencing (I think ScottHa has a picture of our last meeting somewhere on the internets).  I’m still getting used to it a bit, and network latency gives me the willies when there is such a delay in audio or choppiness.  Nonetheless I like being able to “see” people, so I haven’t written it off just yet.

My last 1:1 meeting with my boss also reminded me of geek sounds.  After talking about something he was going to fire off a message to another colleague to connect some dots.  So he paused and started typing.  I swear he uses this keyboard:

I recorded a quick snippet for my own archives…I love the sound of a solid keyboard:

It was too funny not to pass up, sorry Simon.

A lot of people really like those IBM Model M keyboards. Just do search. There's a Wikipedia article and site to buy keyboards that were never taken out of their boxes. They are quite nice to type on. Check it out: http://www.clickykeyboards.com/

Like listening to a quiet waterfall....well...sort of. :-)

It's obviously a Simon thing. I've got one of these too: an IBM Model M from 1984 - the thing's built like a tank; picked it up from Ebay for about $5, cost more to ship it than to buy it. This one had been used in a warehouse and was filthy, but the great thing about these is when they get dirty you just throw 'em in the dishwasher... try that with a Logisoft Wirelesstooth Ergonomic 9000 or whatever these new-fangled keyboards are that the young 'uns are using these days...

My wife uses the same keyboard! I had to buy a Bose sound-cancelling headset just for that!

funny... now I have an audio track to use as aural smoke screen when the client has his ear cocked towards my cage listening for that sweet sound of production

Simon's the fastest typist that I've ever seen (or more to the point, heard). It's amazing. Really.

If he really was using an IBM Model M, his office would have to be sound-proofed. :)

I haven't had the heart to let Simon know his keyboard might give him tinnitus.

I had 3 trips to Office Max recently trying all the new wireless keyboards and mice... I returned 'em all and now back to a stock $5 Dell keyboard and old optical wired mouse!
