Further evidence of Android’s possible failure

Earlier this year I wrote my thoughts on the current mobile scene and what troubles certain players more than others.  I made the assertion that Android will face the same troubles that Windows Mobile is challenged with.  That being that Google/Android are providing a platform and not a physical device.  I think it would be hard to argue that owning the complete platform and hardware is not a good idea.  Apple’s complete control of every aspect of the channel provides them with the ability to deliver in a somewhat more reliable fashion (except for the fact that Contacts suck and their implementation of ‘enterprise’ features is questionable).

So why another post on the failure of Android?  Take a look:

(source: CrunchGear)

What you can’t really see in the photograph is the proposed angle of the button controls (they angle upward in other design drawings/renderings), making it look like a more old-school handset more than a revolutionary device.

And therein lies the struggle for Android: they aren’t making the device.  I’ve seen the demos of Android and have already said they are impressive.  The fact that all of that is made available via open source is great and exciting.  But for consumers, useless unless some great packaging comes with it.  Remember the old adage of lipstick on a pig?  When I look at the above T-Mobile picture device running Android, that’s what I think about.  There isn’t anything innovative in the design and regardless of innovation it doesn’t even match some of the sleekness of current designs.  In the consumer market, design matters over features.

I will say that the “HTC Dream” has other shots/drawings around that look a lot different than the above picture, so I could be eating my words.  But right now it looks like a Nintendo Wii accessory.  And in some angles it looks like an iPod sized thing with an FM transmitter adapter on the bottom…just not polished.

I foresee a bunch of Silicon Valley types walking around with this device, but my wife won’t be carrying it because it looks too Star Trek-ish.

Better view of the weird angle bottom in this video ("is that Android in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"):

I am hoping that Android will be successful, but I fear that it will suffer from the same issues that WinMo does - horrible and cheap implementation from the hardware manufacturers and sad carrier support (at the very least, the carrier should acknowledge that they do carry the phone, instead of, "What the @#$%^ that you have? We don't carry that!")
I own a T-Mobile MDA for 2+ years and now I am now using a Blackberry Curve. I *like* my Blackberry because it can actually dial the phone numbers that want to call instead of the MDA trying to keep up with me and failing 40% of the time. HTC is really doing a huge disservice to Microsoft because they went *CHEAP* and use only a 200MHz CPU instead of a 600+MHz that WinMo should be using. 64MB of RAM is also extremely tiny. The 1st gen of Android will be built by HTC and I would imagine it will be extremely low spec and people will be frustrated with the device and not give Android another chance. Apple iPhone with a completely closed ecosystem and an arrogant and snobbish attitude (which I am growing increasingly annoyed with and am starting to boycott and cancel subscriptions to podcasts and magazines that displayed fanatical fanboy-ism [re: PC Magazine, Infoworld and considering WSJ and NYTimes]) has an advantage that no one else can approach. But that really stifles competition and the open market approach and hopefully, it will come back to bite Apple in a really big way. The iPhone "enterprise" support is a joke and should be pointed out and printed on WSJ, but it didn't. Why? I think we all know...

Too true - really bad hardware form-factor, and T-Mobile's totally lame execution will put this bad-boy into the toilet. Already lots of complaints on T-Mobile. Their site offers an "Exclusive pre-order to existing T-Moble customers - $179". Except when you do order, the price is suddenly $299 + the $18 upgrade fee. If you can order at all. I'm a long-time T-Mobile customer, in year 4 of my original 2 year contract with my original phone - so free as a bird to upgrade. When I try to check out the G1 on the T-Moblle site - am told that "this offer is not available for your account". Huh - typical T-Mobile "service and support" - which married to that abomination of a brick-phone Google is using as their new product launch platform.... any first-year marketing student just threw up and passed out.
