One of the things I hear a lot about it wanting well-designed control templates/styles for developers to use in Silverlight (and WPF).  As someone with that missing creativity gene, I agree.  While we wait for some of these galleries to emerge (and designers to contribute), there is some hope for the rest of us today.

For WPF developers, there has been a commercial resource available (not free) in the templates provided by XAMLTemplates.net.  They provide various styles available for purchase for WPF templates and styles.

There also have been some emerging in the Silverlight.net community gallery (look for Dark Skin for Controls) as well (and I encourage anyone to post theirs to the gallery as well).  One recent one (prepped for Silverlight 2 release) is one of the UK’s user experience consultants, Dave Crawford.  Dave just propped up a blog on MSDN and his first post is his contribution to the Silverlight control template world: Dave’s Glossy Controls.  A preview of the included styles shows some subtle templates to provide a distinctive interface:

Dave released these under Ms-Pl as well and demonstrates in his blog post how easy it is to change some of the colors in his templates as well as how easy they are to use in Expression Blend.  Thanks for contributing Dave!

Good idea, but the usability of those controls is very poor (due to missing contrast)...

This is very helpful for the design-challenged!

It would be great to have a standardized template model so developers could copy a compliant template file into their project, reference it in code, and have all controls instantaly adopt the theme.

Also, it would be useful to have tutorial on designing SL2 apps so end-users could change themes on the fly to suit their current mood.

Where did you find about xamltemplates.net

Thanks for the reference. Nice design. I've run into what seems to be a small problem with it though, and thought you might be able to help (I would've left a comment there, but comments appear to be disabled for that post).

So, I downloaded and applied the theme to a Silverlight app I'm developing. On one of the pages I have a ListBox control. I applied the style to the ListBox control like this:

Inside that ListItem, I've created a ListBox.ItemTemplate, which contains a DataTemplate, which has a StackPanel with Horizontal Orientation, inside which I've placed a HyperlinkButton control and a TextBlock control.

Before applying this style, my HyperlinkButton controls worked fine and their click events fired as expected. After having applied the style, the HyperlinkButtons don't seem to be working anymore. I don't get a Pointer cursor when I mouse over the HyperlinkButtons, and clicking on them doesn't have any effect. The item gets selected in the list and the appropriate style is applied, but my HyperlinkButton click event handler doesn't fire. Any idea why this might be or how I might be able to fix it? Thanks again.

Woops...the code sample didn't stick. Let me try this again:

<ListBox x:Name="ApplicationSummary" ItemsSource="{Binding Path=AppFaultSummary}" Style="{StaticResource GlossyBlackListBox}" ItemContainerStyle="{StaticResource GlossyBlackListBoxItem}">

Hey Tim,

You can also find a lot of designer themes at www.reuxables.com - we were responsible for the Microsoft WPF and Silverlight Toolkit themes as well.

And like that article on CodePlex says you can convert SL themes to WPF, the opposite is quite simple too.

Cheers,
Dax
