Who, didn’t think I’d see “Microsoft Corporation” listed in the Apple AppStore for iPhone this quick.

Want to view gigapixel images on your iPhone?  The team at Live Labs just announced their approved iPhone App – Seadragon Mobile.

So what is Seadragon?  it was the original Microsoft Research project that many products are now based on.  Most popular probably is the Deep Zoom technology brought first to Silverlight 2.  This is the process of taking gigapixel image and providing a smooth viewing experience viewing that image over even lower bandwidth speeds.  One of the most popular Deep Zoom Silverlight sites is the Hard Rock Memorabilia site which shows over 500 of Hard Rock’s most collectable items, including the original Fender guitar from Clapton that started it all.

Now you can get that same viewing experience on the iPhone.  I installed it real quick and it was pretty impressive (viewed over WiFi connection).  Even though the Photosynth option is there, if you don’t read the fine print you’ll wonder why it keeps saying “Loading…” – it’s because it isn’t activated yet.  My guess is that the team wanted to have that option in there so they wouldn’t have to re-submit the app, but rather just turn on the collections.

So plug away!  Use Deep Zoom composer to create your collections with Deep Zoom Composer and view them in various ways now, including mobile.

The technology allows for you to look at an image like below and zoom in to see that the image is actually made up of cola cans ordered in a mosaic format:

Of course this is just a fun example, but there are others and with the Photosynth integration, it would be quite cool.  Check it out!

Great to see two of my favourite 'toys' combined!

I've posted some screenshots to get the 'vibe' of SeaDragon mobile (for those poor souls without an iPhone ;-)

photozoom.mslivelabs.com/Album.aspx

But it doesnt work do you know abot a preciese description on how to add content? I tried to put in all kinds of adresses, but uou know the iPhone has a very bad interface to deal with text (cant copy and paste !) And the seadragon mobile kan go back and edit a adress. So if you enter this wrong. Hmm Dont know how to do this realy. Looks like a good app.

I don't have Iphone but I I've also observed the zoom-in on my Imate. GoogleMaps application has also got this feature. If the technology is based on silverlight than I would say it as a microsoft's version of flash.

Deep zoom image format is very similar to the google maps image format where images are broken into tiles and then displayed as required. The tiling typically follows a quadtree pattern of increasing resolution of image (in other words twice the zoom and twice the resolution). The main difference is that with google maps the actual details on the image change from one zoom level to another, with deep zoom images the same image is displayed at each zoom level.

Let's start with saying I admire your work. I've been playing around (or been poking it, as someone else said;) with the flash examples and I think you did a really great job on structuring the whole thing. I'm really not the most advanced programmer but I can find my way around quite easiliy.650-568 dumps

I'm currently working on a project where I need to load some fullscreen high-quality images to show porfolio stuff. but it has to render supersmoothly on both small and really huge screens.. Now i've been testing your API and the tiled loading doesn't really look as smooth as I would have hoped. Now I'm thinking about using it with single-tile images.

But now I'm doubting wheter I'm on the right track using this sytem. because I'm not using the zooming functionality. I only need the smooth loading and fullscreen image (no matter what resolution).

So actually I'm asking your opinion, do you think it still makes sence to use OpenZoom or are there alternative ways you know of, for selective image loading (depending on stagesize) and progressive loading?

Again, I love your work and I'm sure I will use it on projects in the future, but I don't know wheter I should use it now...
