Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta

Now that Windows 7 beta has been released, there are quite a few people using it and I’ve seen pretty positive feedback about it.  I’ve been running it for about a month now and am impressed with the performance over Vista mostly.  All my programs continue to run fine (only exception is MagicDisc ISO mounter, but found another option – why isn’t ISO mounting a part of Windows – vote here?!?!?!) and I was able to set up a perfect Windows Deployment Server image to quickly image my laptops with the latest build, a slipstreamed version of Office, etc.

NOTE ON CONNECT LINK: People have said they’ve received Page Not Found messages from Connect when clicking the link above.  To be honest, I’m not sure why.  I promise it is there :-).  One user (thanks Barry) noted the following: Register using your MSDN bound passport using the register link in your entry. After that the 404 vanished.  I hope this may work for others as well.

There were a couple of things I wanted to send feedback on regarding the product.  I’m trying to be a good beta user myself and provide feedback on the product just like any other customer.  The cool thing is that the beta team has provided 2 ways within Windows 7 for you to provide feedback.

UPDATE (May 2009): Please leave feedback for Windows 7 using the appropriate beta/release candidate program options.  This blog post is simply a pointer to those methods as they existed in the beta.  Leaving feedback in the comments section here is fine, but it is likely that it isn't being monitored by the Windows 7 team...I'm not on that team!

Send Feedback Link EVERYWHERE in Windows 7

The first is that in every window near the minimize/maximize buttons in the title bar (and a shortcut on the desktop until/unless you delete it) there is a Send Feedback link.  This launches the feedback session.  It asks you to log in with your Windows Live ID, which I did.  I was then greeted with this:

Windows 7 Feedback Dialog Window

It turns out that you first have to be a member of the Connect system (Microsoft’s official public feedback mechanism) program for the beta in order to give feedback.  Seemed strange I thought?  Others who are a part of the beta weren’t getting this message.  As it turns out if you got the download of Windows 7 from the Microsoft Windows site, you’re already a part of the Connect program for the beta.  Others like me who got their download from MSDN or TechNet, didn’t have to “register” the beta and thus are likely in this stage where I was at.  It seems that there was some missing instruction on the MSDN/TechNet sites on a step required in order to give feedback only if you got your beta through these channels.  The information is now back on the site:

Give us feedback on the Windows 7 Beta!

As an MSDN subscriber you have the ability to register with Microsoft Connect to track the status of bugs you report. You will also be able to search, view and vote on bugs other MSDN subscribers have filed.

To register on Connect, please click here. This will enroll you into the MSDN Bug Filing Program. Once you are enrolled in the program you may file bugs using any “send feedback” link in the product and access your feedback tracking page directly from this link.  Source: http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions

Basically, you need to sign up for the Connect program for the Windows 7 beta and then your feedback link will work.

Record your Feedback

The second option for giving feedback is that you actually have the option to record the feedback.  Let’s say you ran into a problem and it was reproducable and you wanted to let the team know about it (please let them know about it).  The tool, called the Problem Steps Recorder, is a part of the Windows 7 beta experience.  To launch this tool, simply click the start menu and type “psr.exe” and start the program.  It will bring up a little recorder and walk you through the next steps.  The end result is an HTML report packaged as a zip file that you can send to someone (application vendor) or attach to your Connect report as indicated above.

You can view a walk through of this at Long Zheng’s site along with a sample report output.  It’s a great idea to add to a product.  Should provide better specifics to a problem.

So if you are a Windows 7 beta user, be sure to use these mechanisms to give feedback about the product and provide as much specifics as you can.

Hope this helps!

I'm really encouraged by the reaction to Windows 7 across all the various media (mostly blogs and twitter) that I churn through on a daily basis.

This is further evidenced by the demand for the beta download we saw at the tail end of last week. Looks like it's going to have a much easier start to life than Vista, the perception of which never really recovered.

I've personally been impressed with the speed and stability of the beta build - installed it on a laptop, but considering going the whole hog and firing it on to my workstation now that the issues with Silverlight debugging have been resolved.

    Thanks,

    Bob

Would love to see ISO mounting built in, it's a "green" feature, good for the environment.

"Basically, you you need to sign up for the Connect program for the Windows 7 beta and then your feedback link will work."

Thanks Tim; this is what I suspected it was wrong. I was going to research & blog about it, but you've saved me (and hopefully a lot of other people) the trouble! :)

FYI your connect link to vote on ISO mounting isn't working.

I downloaded the 64bit version and it took days to install. Now, i've just given up trying to boot up windows 7 because it won't. I've never witnessed such a slow (sometimes deliberatly i'm sure) installation process in my life. Thanks for the beta, i'll never upgrade if this experience is anything to go by.
  6. 1/15/2009 1:16 PM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
Darryl, WOW?! For me it's taken < 30 minutes every time and I've seen people report clean installs of < 15 minutes. Are you doing an upgrade or an install? You should use the feedback mechanism to report this, because that experience is not the norm.
  7. 1/16/2009 5:43 AM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
Winows beta 7 64 bit took 30 minutes to install...so no problem there.
will not reconize my attansic ethernet card says need driver....loaded Vista 64 bit version but still no go.

It's a fresh install on a distinct hard drive. Too bad it looks nice, buy I am just going to remove it at this point.
  8. 1/16/2009 9:47 AM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
Morgan, please use the feedback link and report that missing driver (also let Attansic know).
  9. 1/16/2009 9:54 AM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
I really wish ISO mounting was standard on the win 7 beta, hopefully if enough people want it they will graciously put it in for us people that need an image mounter. I tried magicDisc first and when i went into explorer the frame of it would load but there would be no contents and when i went to shut down it would stay at the "shutting down" screen for what seems like forever. So, I did a fresh install in 15 mins and tried PowerISO but it still diddn't work right, didn't hang with PowerISO but the ISOs weren't working right either so PowerISO is a step in the right direction but not there yet. I guess I'll try some other image mounter,
I've read that none of the programs that use SPTD(SCSI Pass Through Direct)work so I am even going to try any of them.
Anybody have any good mounters that work for them?

I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit version twice now. They were both clean installs and the install went very fast and it even downloaded and installed some Logitech drivers. The problem I had was starting from a cold boot - it would not start and report a boot failure both times. I don't want to have to re-install it every time I want to test it.
  11. 1/18/2009 11:51 PM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
I miss my Windows Vista Home Premium, I am actually going out and purchase it because Windows 7 has taken away all of my drivers that I use to operate my music and as a DJ, I depend on these programs. With Windows Vista these programs were a charm, now I spend everyday regretting the fact, that I downloaded Windows 7. And on top of that I spend way too much time re-booting and shutting down more than anything. Thanks Microsoft, again!
  12. 1/20/2009 12:12 AM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
    Just adding my experiences.
I really love Windows 7 especially the Aero 'autopeek' facility. The management of the toolbar and system tray is much better.
Can't wait for other versions to emerge. However, MS is responding very rapidly to key issues to emerge for example the 'Windows Update' actioning causing an immediate IE 8 crash. Their workround for that has already been posted and works just fine.
Other problems I've encountered that will await action from their various hardware/software vendors.
Windows 7 is incompatible with Logitech Setpoint 4.7 if you are using Logitech input devices. REMOVING Setpoint from your system will overcome the bizarre behaviour with Office and IE 8 you will otherwise encounter.
It is also incompatibe with Sunbelt Personal Firewall (won't install into Windows 7) but VIPRE AV works ok.

they should allow you to use the aero to look at pictures...

dj senoj, what did you expect? this is a beta. Did you install windows 7 over your Vista? Duh...
Install went smoothly and took about 15 mins. I've been running it for a week now and i like the look and feel of it so far. Seems to be quicker, as advertised, at booting and opening IE 8 pages. 99% of programs i installed have worked without problem. Some that didn't were a defrag program and TuneUp Utilities 2009 trial. Some features worked, but again not the defrag module. It causes a BSOD.
Device drivers were automaticaly downloaded and installed with Windows installation. That saved me searching for an Nvidia vga driver. My games install and play without problems too, Call of Duty 4 and 5. I thought Windows updates would be released almost daily. I've only seen 3 or 4 since installing.

Windows 7.
i hope microsoft will solve the problem fast cos i really liked the new windows.

I'm on W7 64 beta 7000 and find it fairly stable. Some glitches with gmail replies and other little "quirks" in IE8(64) are irritating but it is a beta.

Regarding ISO mounts, I've tried my staples like Magic ISO but found the only one that's stable with my version of Windows 7 is
Pismo File Mount Audit Package 1.0.0.048.x64
from Pismotech. It's pretty good and hasn't crashed or thrown any errors yet.

I'd recommend against any beta, particularly a 64 bit, for a business machine. If you're using music software, which usually have pretty sketchy drivers to bein with, then if you're lucky enough to have a stable system just take an image of it and never change anything :)

This is my first 64 bit system so I'm not sure if the various problems loading software are to do with W7 or just 64 bit driver issues.
FYI there's some software that checks your OS version to see if it's compatible before you install and it doesn't recognise W7 as being a valid version of Windows so expect a few issues with that too.

Similar problem with the latest build of Live Messenger, tthe system just freezes & I'm forced to reboot... Worked well when I was runing Vista Home Premium, so I'm not quite sure what's the problem now...

eyo i got windows 7 a few days ago, 1ghz processer, 512 ram, partioned a space on my hdd, used microsofts virtual disc console in xp to install the iso into the newly partioned space, and its so preety, im impressed i really am, ive used vista and its died so much, im using a nvidia 6200 and on the windows update there was the drive for my audio and video, i love that microsoft and nvidia are working together on this one,, seriously grab this while its free its really fun. and u can keep xp as backup
  22. 1/27/2009 10:10 PM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I've downloaded the beta 2 times, burned the ISOs using Roxio, BurnAware, and Active ISOburner, but none of the discs will boot so I can install. I would suspect a non-supported DVD drive, but it has worked for everything else (Pioneer DVD in a Dell Vostro 1700). Would love to try it out...

  24. 1/30/2009 10:17 AM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
I installed the beta and was very impressed with the new interface. Unfortunately, after about 6 boots, I encountered an error which required windows 7 to attempt a startup repair. The attempt was unsuccessful. I have not found any means to provide feedback as I can't boot windows 7 and select the "Send Feedback" link.
  25. 1/30/2009 10:18 AM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
John you should be able to alternatively log in to http://connect.microsoft.com with the same Live ID used to download the beta and give feedback that way (although it is 'less easy' I admit). Can you boot into safe mode (F8 during startup)?
  26. 2/1/2009 1:45 PM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
bad thing about windows 7 beta is when u install a program and try to run it your screen turns blue.doesnt do it on vista just windows 7 beta. ive installed several programs i use on vista wont work on windows 7 , might be cause windows 7 is beta have no idea
  27. 2/1/2009 1:58 PM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
Please be sure to use the feedback mechanisms to provide the name of the program. If you don't report it, we don't know about it (and alert the vendor, etc.)! Use the Problem Steps Recorder as outlined above to even grab screenshots of the program.

Ive been running windows 7 64bit version for a week now, i have the latest dx installed from the microsoft web site wich patches and boosts gaming perfromace and replaces any missing dx9_40.dll issues like when i tried to run deadspace and fear2 and i have the 9.1 ati driver installed with no problem. but has anyone encounterd issues on the website www.paddypower.com using microsofts new ie8 browser as this website has no issue on other pcs at my work and it is fine, yet starts doing stange things like filling in boxes green when you high light fooball odds so now you have a web page with nice green boxes and no odds great, second issue i have is i have encounterd issues projecting my display on my widescreen lg tv using HDMI wich worked fine in my 64bit vista but does not want to use the clone feture and just removes the display without warning, im thinking it could be 9.1 drivers and not windows, ill use the feedback mechanisms to post the issues, by the way anyone using tuneup utilities 2009, it work just fine,

    Tim,
I tried Windows 7 beta running on a dell 4550 and and Acer 5210. Both ran great and I have to say that I am quite impressed with the system so far. I do have one issue however... I installed the 32 bit os on a dell mini 12 and it runs great! I mean so much faster than vista and even XP. But... when I download the video driver (intel WMA 500) the desktop window manager crashes and i can not connect to my other computers via Remote Desktop (Crashes). What do you think could be the problem? Everything runs fine when I revert back to the standard VGA driver but... I'd like to get the 1200X800 native resolution.

  31. 2/12/2009 11:06 AM | # Windows 7 is weird
Windows 7 was the OS which I had the lessest problems with but today it didn't want to start and gave the options: "normal start" and something like "repair" after the first one didn't work I started the second. I waited some hours and it didn't finish. I tried to abort but it just said "Ehhhhh, not possible, wait". So i waited a total of 5 hours just to see that the "repair tool" formated my hard disc and removed everything but the windows startup which wont work after that anyway -.-
    (that happend after a PATCH!)
well, hope they'll be able to fix that and that i was the only person having these problems oO
  32. 2/12/2009 3:52 PM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
Jon that seems really odd -- if you load another browser does it work? Try to isolate the problem. Then use the Send Feedback and Problem Recorder to create an issue for feedback.

I installed windows 7 beta (build 7000) 3 weeks back . I have installed all the drivers for my laptop.

The Only problem : when i put the computer on standby , it wont wake up it would just freeze with black screen , I have to hold the power button and reboot. Earlier I have been using Window 7 Pre Beta Build 6801 for 4 Months it(standby ) worked in pre beta now it wont work in build 7000 (Hibernate works though)

Any Ideas on this guys !!!!

Fifa 2008 & Fifa 2009 both games have graphical errors on windows 7.
and another problem is with the system rating , Vista ultimate is giving 5.6 rating to my system, but on the other hand windows 7 give 3 rating, with black spot on Hard Disk.
I have tried every version of Symantec on windows 7 , but error message appears , Not compatible with this version of windows.
  36. 2/20/2009 10:02 PM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
System Rating Problem , Sometime it shows black spot on processor and sometimes on Harddisk and shows 3 rating . but on the other hand Vista ultimate has no hesitation to show 5.6 rating. Sports games like Fifa 08, Fifa 09 , Cricket 07 has no problem running on Vista, but has graphical errors on windows 7.Sometimes in fifa 09 players becomes zombies. (Drivers and directx are fully updated).
9800 GT has builtin Nvidia Ageia Physics card , when we play Ghost Recon AW 2 in vista ultimate , Physics option and Ageia Physics stages are unlocked in the game , but on the other hand in windows 7 its not. I have also installed new updated drivers for Nvidia Ageia Physics.

If this window has directx11 , then why we are still updating Directx9. Its means directx10 and directx11 are fakes to make the gamers fool.

Installed 64 bit on HP dv9535nr with no problem. Got all my drivers automaticly durring the install, except for the SD card reader, but that installed as soon as it was detected. Boots and shuts down way faster than my 32 bit Home Premium!
Download from M$ took awhile, burned ISO with Nero and installed quickly. Definetly liking how it runs so much smoother and without the "program not responding" issue that is always on my Vista!!!

I have been using W7 since they released the beta. I am on a MSI mobo, AMD 2800 with 512 mem. I use it quite a bit and its really stable for a beta ver. It runs faster than my Vista Premium (AMD Dual core 64 X2 4400 with 3g mem) Still like my XP Pro over both of these. For performance, Ubuntu 8.10 still smokes all of them. The driver issues on Vista are frustrating. I set up a dual boot on my brand new Dell and when I loaded Ubuntu, it setup every device. Maybe after Vista is out 6-7 years and its near the end of its life cycle, then we will most of the drivers.

Windows 7 or should that be Vista service pack?. When Vista was released it was awful, first time I had witnessed an O/S make my dual core system behave like a Pentium MMX 200 MHz system, working as a first line technician for a major pc manufacturer I was bombarded with calls for Xp downgrade packs. So it now looks like the guys at Redmond have ironed out some of the problems and sprinkled some awful eye candy in the hope that this time they will get it right, well this I think will remain to be seen!

In the meantime I will be sticking with my dual boot system Xp and Fedora.

It was working fine with XP and Vista.
  46. 3/11/2009 10:25 PM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
Windows 7 is no where near ready for prime time. Driver issues, many network issues, compatibility problems even with Vista programs. Hopefully these will be fixed before release but as with all microsofts efforts of late, I think it will be best to wait for at least 1 service pack and fix before seriously switching to it.
Performance is a little better than Vista but not much in real terms with modern hardware. The fact that Windows 7 breaks so many programs that work on Vista and its ridiculous network system is enough to worry about, especially for business use!
Lastly its taskbar and horrible GUI is a joke and really annoying. Definately slows down production for the average user.
Yet another so called OS that is just eye candy and no real substance. (Change for the sake of change, not for any benefit!) Its why many people are seriously looking at alternatives, especially for office and corporate environments.
Also if MS charge their ridiculous upgrade cost for essentially a glorified service pack then I think there we're in for the next sequel in the MS drama, "Windows 7 - Vista 2 death march!"
Unless theres a 100% improvement before release then we'll be leaving Windows 7 to the odd development test machine or home PC, and pushing further with alternative desktop solutions - OSX and Linux, and of course XP soldiers on!

I was very pleased with Windows 7 until I tried to hook up my HP A6514F to my new big screen TV. Of course I switched to a wireless mouse and wireless keyboard (both). When I finally saw a picture on the new Samsung LN46A650 it gave me a picture that said that windows would not start. I ran the recovery program etc... but nothing would work. Finally, I returned the computer to the bedroom where it used a LCD monitor, a wired keyboard and a wired mouse.

I STRONGLY SUSPECT THAT THERE IS A CONFIGURATION PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS 7 IF YOU CHANGE BOTH THE KEYBOARD, MOUSE INTERFACE ALONG WITH THE HDMI VIDEO INTERFACE.

    PLEASE CHECK IT OUT !
    THANKS,
    GENE

    Hi
I have downloaded the windows 7 beta and found it to look very nice while using less system resources.
Could not get the network interface card (intel) or my sound card to work (realtek)I will remove it from my system and wait RC1

W7 seems to work well except the networking, it doesn't find (or like to be seen by)linux or macs. My media centre is Mythtv and I need to be able to transfer files to/from it but I can't! This is a major blunder on MS part. At this stage I would not buy it or recommend it

Amos -- I'm running 2 Macs at my house and my Win7 machines interop with them fine. SMB has to be enabled on the *mac* side to be able to work with windows shares, etc. but after that it's been fine. Also, be sure to leave this feedback on the Windows 7 feedback links, rather than here...this is NOT the Windows team blog.
  58. 4/13/2009 5:35 AM | # Windows clock
My biggest complaint about Windows Vista and Windows 7 is actually a very tiny complaint. But since it is SO tiny and so easy to fix, I hope Microsoft can do so before the release date.

The clock in the lower right shows the time and DAY, but not the date. I already know it's Monday. But I don't know that it's the 13th. I hate moving my mouse over the corner everytime I want to know the date. I actually went and got a $9 paper calender to hang in my office just so I know what day it is.

Please show the DATE, not the DAY. Or at least give us the option.

The three seemingly majority computer market shares: gaming, office business and discount computers are all windows or *nix based. They always will be. Mac sells their computers as accessories rather than core components. They lack upgradability for gamers, scalability and compatibility for businesses and price point for discounters. Macs are great for designers (not sure why they got that rep), and people that think the exteriors are cute. Beyond that, however, Microsoft is here to stay.

Has anyone else noticed that ClearType can't actually be removed from Win 7? It bothers me that despite disabling it, I keep seeing font smoothing popping up. Most people don't mind, but I'm nearsighted and the blurriness just kills me. Are they going to fix this before it goes out?

  63. 5/5/2009 7:01 AM | # Shutting Down
This may be small - but seriously - when I am restarting the PC - i am not "shutting down" the PC.

You need to change the wording on the restart screen to "Restarting Now" NOT "Shutting Down" - I've shown this to 5 "non-tech" people I know to see what they would do and 2 hit the reset button thinking it was shutting down.

Restart is restart - shutting down is shutting down.
  64. 5/6/2009 10:13 AM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
Windows needs a disable option to disable programs instead of just uninstall. That way we can see if a programme really is affecting other programes etc. Once you uninstall sometime you would need to download or install the programme again but with a disable, reable option this would be a benefit

it seems there is a bug in rc1, it doesn't create an auto reporting thing so i'll post it here.

in calc everything becomes unusable if you divide by 0 (ie 100/0). normally you should be able to hit the mr button and start over but with rc1 you have to exit and restart calc.

should be a quick fix before the final.
  68. 5/11/2009 10:48 PM | # re: Give feedback on Windows 7 Beta
Just downloaded RC two days ago.
So far the most bothering thing is IE8.
    1. Can not move menu bar to the top of the browser. I made the same changes as in IE7 but it did not help.
    2. Add-ons disabled yelow message is very annoying.
    3. can not enable javescript and as the result can not download flash player.
    4. can not uninstall it and use IE7

Windows 7 quick launch does not work the way I expected. Bacically it is task bar with a bunch of grouped icons which is not as good as even Vista quick launch task bar.

I also can not turn on XP mode even though I did everything Microsoft suggest to turn it on.
It looks very much like vista. The same ugly aero which is impossible to turn off.

Our company is currently testing Windows 7. As far as I hear we will not switch to Windows 7 in the near future. I have heard this about vista and we still use XP.
I think that XP was the best OS Microsoft ever had. It is fearly reliable, user friendly, intuitive. I do not understand why they did not improve and develop XP.

Unlike other enthusiast I do not think that Windows 7 will have better success in the business world. Microsoft can force regular users to buy new computers with preinstalled Vista or Windows 7 but I do not think that they can force big companies to switch to this mess.

I also do not understand people saying that so far Windows 7 is perfect.
I can not install 80% procent of the soft that I had on Vista. The only thing that I can install is Microsoft products.

OK found how to resolve flash Player problem.

There are two IE8 in Windows 7 64 bit. One is 64 bit and another one is 32 bit.
I can only install flash player with IE8 32 bit.
It can not be installed so far with IE8 64 bit.

Alex -- no browser plugins are 64-bit native, so if you rely on plugins (like most of us do), then you'll have to run the 32-bit mode for the browser.

Ventrilo cant find any servers- much less connect to one. I have portforward and diabled firewall.

Company of heroes Tales of valor can not connect to sign me in.

There are other exsamples of conection problems in windows 7, but I think its fair to say it must be a port, firewall or win defender issue.

Using Windows 7 RC X64 and latest Nvidia WHQL video driver, cannot get 24" LG monitor to synch at anything other than 59 hz. (Two PCIe video cards of different models and brands tried. No difference.) Attempts to change frequency to 60 hz. within Windows don't "stick." Monitor cannot be used in HDMI mode. This problem appears widespread among users of *larger* monitors of numerous brands based on postings. Trying driver directly obtained from Microsoft does not make a difference. Please make the right people aware of this problem. Thank you.

While this is not the place for this I'd like to comment on a few comments I found here with some suggestions to help out with the betas and RC1 issues..

ISO Mounting (even on x64) Try PowerISO it works great..

As far as monitors go, I have that LG monitor someone is complaining about only operating at 59. There was a CD with your LG monitor, the 59 and 60 support is not a function of the nVIDIA graphics driver. It's of the LG monitor driver. You need to install a new monitor driver not a new graphics driver. Then you will see magically the support of something other than 59.. If you don't have the monitor driver cd still contact LG's support.

Other issues mentioned here: if your computer tells you it's doing a repair of your startup let it run.. that means you had something try to rewrite your boot sector, probably a worm or something like that. It also means your malware/anti-virus isn't up to snuff. You should have made a system repair recovery disk right away. If it runs for hours and you cancel this you are going to hose your partition. My recommendation is if you do this to run your recovery/repair disk you were supposed to make immediately..

IE 8 connection issues.. go to tools->internet options->connections tab->LAN settings button make sure on the popup windows that appears that the "Automatically Detect" settings and "Use Proxy.." buttons are selected. Only click on the "use proxy.." button if automatically detect doesn't fix the problem..

The questions asked here are all customer support issues from people not knowing how to configure the beta, not issues with the beta.. It's gaps in customer configuration knowledge..

Purchased new MSI KA780 mobo, 4gig ram, AMD Quad core 3.2Ghz X955, 500w power supply, 2x 500Gb 7200rpm seagates and it scored 3.6 WTF? Win7 is slow and clunky compared to WIN XP in ALL respects. See no way this would boost productivity or anything else for that matter. to many changes and it takes to many open panes to complete tasks. The OS should be a fine tuned engine that supports the people. Helps them accomplish tasks. NOT slow them down trying to learn another microsoft money drain. They have lost their minds there and I will never give up XP until I go to APPLE or open source. Microsoft is just trying to make the turd taste better to all us users. I just wiped out win 7rc and reloaded my new system with win xp pro. WOW! and it really rocks, and that is the way it WILL STAY... Wake up microsoft tast your own turd!

The taskbar has such great potential, but I would hate to see it finalized without some more usabiilty features and power user customization options. For instance, one of the things driving me nuts right now is that it won't allow me to drag a disk drive onto the taskbar for a shortcut to the volume. I just can't live without that.

I just installed the RC 32bit version and it's running damn fast. Had XP installed before, but now at work XP just feels so slow compared to my home machine with win 7.
Had no issues so far. All drivers were found immediately, its running fast and stable. Didn't have time yet to test all the new features though.

As someone mentioned it in the comments:
If you have drivers that check the OS prior to installation and denies progress under win 7, simply use the compatibility mode on the setup programm to overcome this minor operating system check.

Hate the RC : loved the beta, but have had repeate poor performance (50% interrupts) and many BSODs with the RC. Yes, I hear you all say, bad ATI drivers or failing hardware but rolled back to XP and rock solid for a week. So either I'm going to have to change my hardware (if ATI really can't produce a decent driver) or give up on the only things I really want from '7 : libraries and homegroups + a few other nice to haves. I now have to say they're not worth the hassle.

i have no feedback links in my title bars or on the desktop. i didn't activate windows 7 when i installed it, because i had the activation key in a file and i couldn't access any files while installing. so i activated it later (it wasn't easy to find how to activate it), and signed up for the connect thing, and rebooted, and hoped that would enable feedback links. they're still not there.

I installed windows 7 on my tablet pc (Asus R1F). Adobe reader, AVG free, SPSS 16.0 were installed and are running smooth without problems.
I'm very well pleased with the improved writing pad!! I'm encouraged to use it more often now. I was also pleasantly surprised with the newly added Math Input panel.
Only negative point now is that I cannot install my drivers needed to flip my tablet pc screen. I tried to install it with the properties set to Vista SP2 comptability. This time the exe ran, but soon i got the blue screen of d***h memory dump. After restarting I rolled back to the original W7 driver to be safe. So no portrait writing for me at the moment...
    Anyway, very good first impression.

Never thought I would be giving compliments to Microsoft, but Windows 7 appears to be a sweet operating system. I have run every iteration of Windows since 3.0, and done the usual amount of cussing, screaming and hair pulling. XP was my favorite until this arrived, and Vista did not impress me. My two GB ram memory struggled constantly.

My gut reactions to Seven? Clean, intuitive, fast, beautiful looking. Before install, I had a dead network card on my laptop that 'couldn't be fixed'. I had been using a temporary USB card for the internet....a real pain. Somehow Windows 7 found and installed the correct driver automatically and now the original card functions like new. Even connects flawlessly with my network printer. Unless something radical happens to change my mind, I would enthusiastically recommend this operating system to everyone.

hi i have some feedback on windows 7. specifically the feature where u press windows and a number n e.g. windows key and 1 and it will either open the 1st program in the taskbar or restore/maximise it.

when you have 15 taskbar icons its hard to count from the left. my suggestion is when the windows key is depressed it should show a set of numbers on the bottom of each icon which would help to see which icon corresponds to the one you want to open.

another feedback it when n > 9, unsure of what to do. maybe should have letters q w e r etc... for that case so you can open ALL programs using the windows key and another key. thanks for reading.

RC 7 Win 7 x64 installed fine for me but I have 5 items of hardware that won't work with it, embarressing for MS is that one of them is their Fingerprint Reader. The others include a Hauppauge TV card, a web cam, Epson scanner, Wacom pen tablet and Belkin print server.

So, no matter how good Win 7 looks and feels I shan't be using it as it would cost me approx $700 to upgrade all of these products.

    MICROSOFT... NEVER AGAIN!

I designed, tested, and manufactured Media Center Servers professionally when the MCE UI was originally developed in beta many moons ago for Windows XP. The aggravations that Vista caused me after XP MCE caused blood to shoot out of every raging orifice of my being. At the time I was a Microsoft devotee and purchased several copies of retail and oem Vista Ultimate copies.

I waited and waited, but Microsoft never gave me my money's worth for Vista Ultimate after nearly a year of unresolved (And maddening) NVIDIA/VISTA driver problems (TDR, anyone...anyone?) So I decided to buy an iphone and an imac.

I am currently running Windows 7 ULTMATE RC2 on VMWARE on Leopard and although I appreciate that Microsoft has copied many of the already visual and simplified organizational structures of the Apple OS X Leopard operating system, I can't say that I see any tangible reason why anyone who was ripped off purchasimg Vista Ultimate should have to pay ANY MONEY AT ALL for Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade for what is essentially Vista SP 2

I was shocked and abhorred to find out that the (Censored) in Redmond think I should pay $219 for an upgrade that should be given away for FREE to those who wasted their money on a broken Vista OS that cost them time and productivity and NEVER delivered anything Ultimate, unless an ULTIMATE MIGRAINE, ULTIMATE PAIN IN THE (CENSORED), ULTIMATE ULCER, or ULTIMATE PSYCHOSIS counts for anything.

I sold my XBOX 360, my $6000 media server that I built, and my Creative ZEN MP3 PLAYER.

Just about the time I was considering drinking the Microsoft Kool-Aid again....I quickly had flash backs of Vista and remembered that I vowed to never give Microsoft another dollar of my money ever again.

In the mean time I will wait for Snow Leopard which will leap frog Windows 7 when it's released in a few months and it will be fairly priced with out any of the Windows activation headaches.

Microsoft, you can send all your hate emails to jcarcopo@live.com

I use MobileMe now and only use my live account for spam which is all it's good for.

( I have 20+ years using, testing, recommending, and supporting Microsoft, but now I am one of the many converted Mac users who helped Apple achieve a 10% (and growing daily) market share)

    Internet Games!!

1.Every time I play a game of checkers,Spades..etc the the other person always quits on me (usually when they are losing) is there any way to stop this from happening or to block these people who do it repeatedly from playing.

    2. (Select a message to send) why can't we type our own messages when playing?

3.Can't play with the same player?(play again) it automatically searches for another player.

I know these games aren't that great but I enjoy playing a game from time to time I thought they would have fixed these things in windows 7.....Is there any chance to add/Fix the things I stated above before it goes retail?

At first I was very impressed wiht the Windows 7 OS. Some of the driver and printer problems I have had in the past had been resolved. The performace was much better as well. Some of the new features are nice. But stabilty is still a MAJOR issue. I have Win 7 on 2 computers (newer desktop and Laptop). The desktop Blue screen about 1 time a day and the Laptop has apps crash the most popular one is Office 2007. I have been a Microsoft supporter for 10+ years and have hugh hopes for this release but I am Disapointed on it's stability. Microsoft Please fix your OS....

I really dislike the fact that there is no calendar. I dislike even more the fact that I wasnt warned of this when I switched from vista, and my whole calendar and all the dates that I used on vista are now inaccessible. What a pain!

Got a idea for the taskbar, i never seen nothing like it before in any OS.
When you open a program or a folder, you have all of them against the left hand side of the taskbar isnt it? and when you are working with 2 or more windows a side and minimize them
you dont know wich one is from the right or the left and need to actually read it..(and when is 2 folders with the same name you get confused..)
What i realized was that you dont really need to have them all against left hand side of the taskbar..
if you move on window to the right or center or any other side the taskbar icon should move along with the active window, so when you minimize them you knew wich one you wanted to maximize again (because that part you remember when you are working, for ex. you now that you need to copy from righ window to left).
