Last night I decided to mess around with some older laptops.  I had an HP Pavillion ze2000 CTO laptop (not sure why they call it “CTO” – I guess the Altec Lansing speakers included makes it an executive ;-)).

Works on my machine logoI installed Windows 7 (32-bit) from my home Windows Deployment Server with no problem.  This one took longer than the less-than-20-minute installs I’d been experience.  I’m not sure why.  It wasn’t terribly longer, but about 30-40 minutes I think.  I ran Windows Update and it got all the latest drivers.  A quick check in Device Manager showed no device problems.  Sweet.  I began testing things.  Audio playback was the last thing I played around with.  System sounds, MP3, WMV audio, CD audio…all worked.  Then I put in a DVD (Pirates of the Caribbean to be specific).  The machine suddenly sounded like a machine gun shooting back at me.  Video playback was fine, but audio playback couldn’t work.  I spent a few minutes tinkering then headed to the interweb for help.  My search was hp ze2000 dvd audio not working windows 7 (I type that here in hopes to help some others).  I tried other search terms (dvd audio windows 7 ze2000, dvd audio problems windows 7) and yielded others having problems but no working solution.  Some suggested bad drivers and pointed to older drivers (which I tried and wouldn’t install).

Late in the night I sent a note to my trusty colleague on the Windows test team.  We send a few notes back and forth, then he looped another colleague in and asked me to send the DXDiag report.  2 seconds later I got an email with the classic “try this” note and a few steps.  Boom.  It worked.  I share the works on my machine solution here…it was one of those dreaded checkboxes you wouldn’t think to check.

NOTE: This solution may work and may not.  The fact is that the laptop I have isn’t even a Vista certified machine and the Conexant AC’97 audio driver isn’t supported.  The rep I later talked to was surprised audio even worked at all with Windows 7.  It all works now though!  Your mileage may vary.

THIS IS ONLY A WORK AROUND IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE A SAME PROBLEM ON OLDER MACHINE WHICH USES THE ABOVE AUDIO DRIVER – no need to mess with things working already!

First start up the Sound control panel applet and you’ll see the speakers listed there.  Windows Update found the generic Conexant ACLink Audio driver and installed it already – it indicated that was the latest (date stamp of 2005).

Windows 7 Sound control panel applet

Then choose the properties of the speakers and head to the advanced tab.  When there, UNCHECK the box that reads Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.

Speaker properties advanced tab

Once unchecked, my DVD audio worked.  Other audio still worked as well.

Random checkbox setting huh?  I would have taken a long time to get to that setting.  Hopefully this helps others who might be braving upgrading older laptops to Windows 7.  And yes, it runs Windows 7 great.

ironically... this just solved a problem I was having with Communicator and Zune and Media Center clashing over who had exclusive ownership of my speakers! Thanks

Thanks for this article. I am running a Media Center in my living room with an Creative X-Fi card inside. Since upgrading to RTM I've had this problem a couple of times. Not being sure if it was a fault with the card, m/b or software, I tried removing hardware, and then reinstalled W7. It has happened only once or twice since and I resolved it by restarting the Windows Audio service. Next time it happens I shall try your suggestion.

I just wish all Executives came with Altec Lansing speakers. Maybe then they would sound a bit better. :-P

Barak - I'm not sure I can help -- this was a specific problem for me. I'd recommend uninstalling the drivers (choosing to delete the drivers from the history) -- then running Windows Update to see if it finds the latest drivers for you. Good luck!

I have this same issue on my Compaq Presario V2000 using that same driver. I got around the issue because I found that the DVD would playback fine playing through Media Center and only played that horrible noise when trying to play the DVD in media player.

" I had an HP Pavillion ze2000 CTO laptop (not sure why they call it “CTO”"

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but CTO is hp's way of denoting Configure-To-Order laptops.

=)

John - LOL -- i seriously thought it was some notation of an 'executive' laptop -- thanks for clarifying.

OMG Thank you so much! I was having the exact same problem on a Compaq Presario V5000. It appears to have the same soundcard as the laptop you were using. Followed the instructions in the article, and whammo! My audio now works when playing a DVD in Windows Media Player. Again, THANK YOU! I NEVER would've found that on my own.

Barak, for the Lenovo 3000 N100 download the appropriate drivers from Lenovo. You should see SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers when you have the right driver.

Tim, thanks for the hint. This non-exclusive setting solved my DVD audio problem on a Lenovo 3000 N100.
11/2/2009 8:59 AM | # re: Windows 7 DVD Audio playback problem for old laptops
thank you thank you so so much much. I searched for an answer until I found this working one. I almost broke my laptop before I decided I was not well equipped enough to take it apart. I still need to get down to the fan one of these days...
--I figured it was OS related when the drive (and driver) worked fine with audio CDs and audio from video files burned to DVD/CD. Can't thank you enough, it seems

Woo hoo! This worked for me too. (Windows 7, 64-bit). Odd that this solution appears nowhere on Microsoft's own support sites.

Thanks, upgraded my HP Pavilion zv6000 to Windows 7. I experienced the same noise when playing a DVD Movie. I followed the instructions and now it is just fine. Thanks again for posting the fix, I would have never figured it out and would have spent hours on the phone with tech support scraching their head.

I noticed this same issue just last week on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv5000) after upgrading to Windows 7 just after Thanksgiving. After not finding much on the Internet and trying some other things, I found your Web site and the instructions worked. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I love you... I have a Pavillion dv5283ea and since I installed the Windows7 RC I got this problem with WMP and the DVD sounds. I tried a lot of things to solve it, but none of them worked.
Now, with your help, it's working again.

When I opened the sound applet it has no devices shown, so no Properties button is activated. It says "No audio devices are installed" Running "Scan for new hardware" yields a Multimedia Audio Controller in the Device Manager under Other Devices but nothing in the Sound Applet.

Any ideas?

I am curious. I have the same laptop (HP Pavilion ze2000) and am wondering how well Windows 7 is running on the system. I have upgraded to the max amount of memory (2 GB). I currently have Windows XP Pro on here but I love Windows 7. Have you noticed much of a difference in speed at all? (Please email me if you reply.) Thanks!

Machine gun sound is gone on an HP Pavilion dv5000, perfect solution. Thank you very much, saved us a trip to the local computer geeks. Running Windows 7 Ultimate works well in all other functions, very stable, for those who who had questions regarding W7.

I want to add my name to the chorus of thanks. I upgraded the zd7000 to Win7 yesterday and was hitting my head against the wall into the wee hours of the morning trying to figure out this problem. I threw in the towel and figured I'd have to downgrade back to XP today since the primary role of this machine is now as a DVD player. Decided to give it one more chance this morning. Googled (sorry, did not Bing) "no dvd sound following upgrade to windows 7" and found your blog. What a simple fix! I was starring at the "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" button yesterday but it seemed natural for it to be enabled.

Thank you for taking time to lay this out so nicely in your blog. Much much appreciated.

9/23/2011 9:53 AM | # re: Windows 7 DVD Audio playback problem for old laptops
I wish I had found this some time ago. When I first installed Windows 7 on my laptop I had this problem. I actually got someone at Microsoft support (apparently in Bombay - it was extremely difficult to get him "off script" so that we could talk like human beings normally do) to help me out on it. It was a marathon session that lasted just over 5 hours. He first marched me through a litany of checks which I had already done myself (telling him that did not deter him) to no avail. He finally took remote control of my laptop and went to work himself. He spent several hours working on the problem. I went about puttering around the house checking back now and again. In the end he actually fixed it. I don't know exactly what he did but he fixed it so I was fine.

So here I am, a year later. I righteously screwed up my operating system and corrupted the software and the boot file. I was unable to boot, let alone access anything. I wound up reformatting the hard-drive and reloading Windows 7. My first attempt at playing a commercial movie DVD (all other audio worked fine, even music CDs) came up with the old problem. Dreading another marathon session I started looking again online and found this fix here. Simple, less than a minute and everything was fine with the world again.

Moral - It's good to have a friend at Microsoft who knows what they are doing.

Thank you profusely for posting this cure.

Great!
This brought new life to my old HP Pavilion zd8000 which have been reinstalled with Windows 7 Pro. I've never payed attention to the audio settings which normally just works.
Now, the Windows Media Player neither worked too well (garbled video playing DVD movies) but the new VLC Player solved this.
