Over time a few people have contacted me about the missing WatermarkedTextbox from Scott Guthrie’s Digg sample for Silverlight he created a while back.  I had posted the updated code and binaries for WatermarkedTextbox here for you to use if you wish.

NOTE: Incidentally this is the same code that is actually in the DateTimeTextBox that is included in the Silverlight Toolkit if you just want to use that :-).

After thinking about it though, I decided to take a stab at updating this getting started guide for new developers to Silverlight to incorporate some new features.  This isn’t for you folks that have already got your feet wet.  This is the Hello World –> have something complete in a few steps crowd.  Does it use Prism or MVVM?  No, not yet.  I think I wanted to keep simplicity to help people get started and then refactor from there.

Here’s the breakdown that I created (similar to Scott’s original flow):

I hope this helps some folks and refreshes our getting started content for the newbies!  I’m also going to try to refactor this simple application a few times to help learn the Model-View-ViewModel approach to XAML development so be sure to subscribe to my feed for updates.

Hi Tim;

Excellent work as always. What I really like about your series, whether videos or blogs, are the fact that you are always focused and you bring a point home.
If I were to categories these educational series, I would categories them (as you started), the "Getting Started" series, then the next category (again as you pointed out), would be using Patterns & Practices for a better overall design, like Prism and MVVM. The third category would be "Business application" where developing a full app using RIA services, MVVM and most importantly, a complete session on deployment of how setting IIS, SQL, Internet server on production machine and how to move a RIA/Silverlight from development to a production site.

We are in the third year of SL now and I think a complete picture is needed how to start an app and take it all the way to production.

As John Papa (a great resource on data & MVVM), Pete Brown (Architectural direction) are coming on board, I think this might be a great project for all three of you. Just my two cents! :-)

Hey!
Awesome tutorial.
I think it would be really helpful if you could cover RIA Services, especially authentication using RIA as opposed to a lot of tutorials that are out there currently which essentially direct developers towards implementing forms or windows authentication.

kind regards,
10/6/2009 11:25 AM | # re: Getting Started with Silverlight development
Sahgilbert - take a look at the RIA Services overview here: silverlight.net/.../net-ria-services-intro which has authentication in the default template.

Awesome! Simply awesome!
10/7/2009 1:04 PM | # re: Getting Started with Silverlight development
Tim: not sure but I think a few things are not covered very well in the ria startup on how the SL+ASP.NET auth are setup.
I recall it may have not given info on what to do to setup ASP.NET auth so that the ria tools could use it. Granted that info is out there if you know wehre to look but some folks may not have done that step before or not done that for a long time... it had been years since i had to create a new site and all the config files and sql db .... so a short thing on how the parts fit might be woth having around.
10/7/2009 2:01 PM | # re: Getting Started with Silverlight development
Denny I think that's a point well taken -- even me spulunking the asp.net site has outdated information. I'll see if I can cue it up for some folks (maybe me :-0) to update some background information on ASPNET memebership.

I studied hard learning ASP.Net with the v1 beta so that I was ready for the release of VS2003. All I have done since then is develop apps and I have learned no new tricks for 8 years (wow). I stumbled across Tim's webcam video and I was hooked. Damn, now I'm going to have to use my brain again and learn all about Silverlight. The VERY basics are always appreciated when starting out with something you have never worked with before. Cheers ;-)

Amazing tutorial, very precisiously cut into 7 parts, it gave me a lot, although I've been experiencing Silverlight for more than 4 months.
2/3/2010 4:35 AM | # re: Getting Started with Silverlight development
Part 1: Really getting started – the tools you need and getting your first Hello World
Part 2: Defining UI Layout – understanding layout and using Blend to help
Part 3: Accessing data – how to get data from where
Part 4: Binding the data – once you get the data, how can you use it?
Part 5: Integrating additional controls – using controls that aren’t a part of the core
Part 6: Polishing the UI with styles and templates
Part 7: Taking the application out-of-browser

Among these 7 parts, the first 4 parts are of great help for someone like me starting Silverlight very beginning.
Thanks a ton to Tim Heuer.

Hi Tim

Great work. thanks ever so much.

Question about redistributable bit, we are a software company and we were considering to go the Silverlight way, however Microsoft seems to have put in (an intentional) clause about redistributing SL runtime that you can only redistribute within your organisation. As much as we like to program on Silverlight, we now cant seem to develop and cater for all our customers and is going to be a problem to convince our management that Silverlight is the way.

Is it true that we cant redistribute SL runtime, if so Why? and is Microsoft going to relax this at some point of time

Well it looks like dll hell is back!
So the question is, as
this runs on the client,does the client have to have the correct dll's ?
I. first issue.
I.a write up and video is not vb.net.
I.b OK sample is actually a complete vb.net application - not the phoney half-baked not working version of some translated c# code
I.b.i for instance the toolkit sample Silverlight.Controls.Samples.VB.sln which doesn't work and very little vb
II. Second issue this code is silverlight 3
II.a after a day - finally got the namespaces, dll's and methods changed to have a working silverlight 4 version.
II.b But this runs on the client, does the client have to have the correct dll's ?

Hi Fellow VBers using silverlight 4
Can some one tell me how to get the navigate to work from history to search
with the parameter - strangely if I remove the parameter it works.
As this is an important feature, I really would like to know how to do it.
Thanks:

OK All The facts here

1. I am using visual studio 2010

2. Started with

Read Tim Heuer's 8-part blog series on getting started he has vb source for silverlight 3 which works:

2.a. System.Windows.Controls

2.b. C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v3.0\Libraries\Client\System.Windows.Controls.dll

2.c.. v2.0.50727

3. I took the same code and copied it into a project where the reference is pointing to silverlight 4

3.a. System.Windows.Controls

3.b. c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0\Libraries\Client\System.Windows.Controls.dll

3.c. v2.0.50727

4. The line of code that fails is:

Me.NavigationService.Navigate(New Uri(String.Format("/Search/{0}", SearchTermHistory.SelectedItem.ToString()), UriKind.Relative))

error message is can not find

5. if I remove the parameter it works Me.NavigationService.Navigate(New Uri("/Search", UriKind.RelativeOrAbsolute))

But I really need to be able to pass the parameters around.

6. Below is the original xmal - no matter where I put the suggestion I get errors:

<navigation:Page x:Class="TwitterSearchMonitor1.Views.History"
xmlns="schemas.microsoft.com/.../presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
xmlns:d="schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008"
xmlns:mc="schemas.openxmlformats.org/.../2006"
mc:Ignorable="d"
xmlns:navigation="clr-namespace:System.Windows.Controls;assembly=System.Windows.Controls.Navigation"
d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480"
Title="History Page">

<Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot">

<StackPanel>
<TextBlock x:Name="HeaderText" Style="{StaticResource HeaderTextStyle}"
Text="Search Term History"/>
<ListBox x:Name="SearchTermHistory" SelectionChanged="SearchTermHistory_SelectionChanged" />

Hi Tim,

Though I have been working with Microsoft Technologies for a long time now and got a chance to work with SilverLight just now. As it's a fairly new technology, it was important to find the starting point; a tutorial that neither complicates things for a starter nor just a "Hello World" tutorial. This is a perfect "Getting Started".

Thanks for spending your valuable time for us starters. It really helps.

I think the data accessing part of Silverlight could be a bit faster, and I heard this opinion from several other developers too. Although I'm a link submission expert and not a professional Silverlight developer, I think there could be some modifications to this system.

Definitely cool. There is the caveat that it will not work to style arbitrary content, since you need to know the text content of the element and be able to rely on it being fixed. transferring from community college That’s a shame, as it’d be fun to use on page headings and navigation, but it’s still great for applying to branding areas.

To process a transaction, you type in the amount of the charge, swipe the card through the dongle and the customer authorizes the purchase by writing their signature across your screen with their finger. They will then be prompted to enter an email address so they can receive a digital receipt. If the purchaser is also a user of this app, they can add additional security to their account with a photo, so you know what the cardholder should look like. TDAH HYPERACTIVITÉ STRESS ANXIÉTÉ

I kind of figured out that since this article was published the uri has changed and even the downloaded code didn't work. It was very frustrating as it seems some of the namespaces have also changed. If you get a chance can you please update everything and make sure everything still works. I can't get past lesson 4 because nothing is working!!!

Hey Tim,

First of all THANK YOU so much for this tutorial, it's helping me a lot!
I am graduating soon, so for my graduation topic I wanted to do a presentation in silverlight. I am from Macedonia, so I had this idea of making like a dictionary english macedonian in silverlight , but a lot more fun and animated then the ones we have in my country now. So I was wondering if u can help me by giving me directions on what to pay attention, and I am really a beginner in this so this might sound like a stupid question for you, but.. I am gonna need to connect a data base full with english macedonian terms with like a good cool animation, so I can do that with silverlight right? and how? :/

Thanks Tim.

Nice tutorial layout. I use Visual Studio for Web Development all the time, but haven't done anything with Silverlight to this point. I have always assumed that it is mostly for doing video, but looks like a way to do a lot of user interface stuff that would normally require me to hand-write Javascript. Would you mind if I linked to this site from my Church Technology Blog? I don't think that many church techs use Silverlight on their web sites because it is perceived to be harder to implement that some of the other technologies. At least this is a good resource so that they can learn more about it.
