If you installed the Silverlight Client for Facebook, and also upgraded to the release candidate for Silverlight 4, you may have noticed it stopped working :-).

NOTE: Applications compiled on Silverlight 4 beta will not work on machines with Silverlight RC runtime.  This is known/expected.  As with all pre-release software, this type of breaking can be expected.

We’ve recently updated the Facebook application, and you will have to re-install.  Follow these steps:

  1. Uninstall the Silverlight Facebook client.  You can do this in a few ways.  First on Windows through the Add/Remove Programs or by right-clicking on the application while it is running (even though it doesn’t work) and choose ‘Remove Application’ – I recommend the Add/Remove Program control panel option.  On Mac OSX, simply move the application to the trash.
  2. Ensure you have Silverlight 4 RC installed.  If you don’t the Facebook client welcome page will provide the links.  Reminder that this is still pre-release software and future uninstalls might be required.
  3. Visit http://bit.ly/facebookclient and follow the instructions.

You should now have the updated Silverlight for Facebook application installed.  The team received a lot of good feedback they look at.  This build doesn’t necessarily have any of those suggestions/fixes…and is more of a compatible build for the Silverlight RC runtime.  There are a few things that we finally brought forward from the initial PDC09 demonstration.

Custom Window options are clearly visible.  You’ll notice the ‘window chrome’ (as it is referred to) is gone and the custom window is in the application:

Notice the custom maximize, minimize and close buttons:

Custom window chrome toolbar

Also notice in the lower right corner the resize adorner:

The updated application also implements the ‘mini-mode’ (from the toolbar area in the upper right) which produces a stripped down view of the main news feed:

Facebook Client mini-mode

Again this is a subtle update to keep the client working for you.  These features use the custom window options available to Silverlight 4 developers.  You can read about this updated feature here and also watch a developer video tutorial on how to implement similar functions in your application here.

Have fun on Facebook and hope this helps!

Shibubh - clear your browser cache -- that's what triggered it for me on one machine.

Robert - Sorry about that. Not everything we do will include source. :-(

Parag -- facebook client bug.

Nice work, but really I don't understand why there is no source or at least pieces of source to let people learn how to implement a complete facebook application, it's not like it's a commercial application, is it possible to have an explanation about that ?

this said it's a very nice work :)

While I am glad to see this progressing so nicely, I am somewhat amused at the fact that "One girl's take on tampon ads" and am enternally grateful of the spoiler alert warning that "her period wardrobe does not include white spandex"

Good one Tim, we're giggling over here :)

FaRess -- there isn't source because of some IP issues we are working through. Also, it is initially an inspirational reference app to see what is possible. We are still putting some pressure on a lot of folks to put the source out once SL4 is released.

Niel -- holy crud, I didn't even notice -- I must censor my own screenshots (and facebook friends!)

Michael - are you sure you a) installed the Silverlight 4 release candidate and then b) uninstalled re-installed the application?
4/4/2010 2:41 AM | # re: Silverlight Client for Facebook updated for Silverlight 4 RC
hmm i experienced the exact same problem as Micheal..this was after i updated to the RC version of silverlight and the updated version of the facebook client..the older version didn't have this problem though.

i'm getting extremely annoyed with this.
i installed the plug in and reinstalled it etc.
had the same issues as Michael Mckeever,
after i deleted all the files related to silverlight
i downloaded the client again and reinstalled it.
is there a way to get a direct link to the RC version?
everytime i try to redownload the facebook app it will NOT download. it just sends me back to the "download for intel mac or PC" page.

i'm running OSX 10.5.8 and the previous version worked perfectly until ofcourse the update came out.
i wasn't even notified of the update even with "update notifications" on
4/5/2010 10:44 AM | # re: Silverlight Client for Facebook updated for Silverlight 4 RC
Ichiro - you must ensure the following: 1) have the Silverlight 4 RC (still a pre-release software) installed -- direct link for mac: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=167221 then return to this site after all browsers restarted (ensure that so new version of plugin is loaded by the browser).

Update notifications aren't enabled on this because it isn't a signed application -- it's a pre-release/beta software that we're providing. Along with that comes some pain.

hmm. quite odd

i've now got 6 copies of the RC package file.
and the issue is still unresolved.
i've tried going to the facebook client site using other browsers too. and the result is all the same.
back to the original page.

ichiro -- feel free to email me and i can try to help solve this with you. To clarify -- you don't have a PowerPC do you?

Hi Tim
http://bit.ly/facebookclient link still points me to the Facebook client for Silverlight 4 Beta page. The only thing I can see there is View License Terms. Please advise.
Thanks

Durges -- that's the same app -- we just didn't update that intro graphic.
4/5/2010 10:27 PM | # re: Silverlight Client for Facebook updated for Silverlight 4 RC
Ok but how do I install that App? The only thing I can see there is the banner and the View License Terms Link. I have Silverlight 4 installed on my box. (4.0.50303.0)

Durgesh - You should see a button as well that says 'accept and install' ? that's the install link. Clear your browser cache and revisit the site to make sure.

I'm new to this silverlight stuff. I found this out while watching a video on Youtube about Chris P. talking about this. I went to the site, downloaded Silverlight, refreshed the page and went on installing Facebook Silverlight Client. after I clicked "install" a window appeared. The window appeared said: "One or more ActiveX controls could not be displayed because either:

1) Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. blah blah blah.

2. You have blocked a publisher of one or more of these controls.

When I click ok, a white page appears and on the top left it says "Install Microsoft Silverlight"

What do I do? I've checked the settings on my IE and set everything on default, nothing; everything on enable/prompt; nothing.

I'd really like help on this. I wanna try it :D.

Thanks in advance,
Arvee.

Huh, here's a strange problem. I uninstalled this client, only to reinstall it today. I have the latest version of Silverlight. After the reinstall, the login window pops up and I enter in my email and password as usual. However, when the pop up goes away, nothing from Facebook starts showing. It's just the background image, the about link, and the login link (when I click the login link, the login window pops up and quickly closes on its own). Not even the Min/Max/Close buttons show. I can't drag it around. I have to close it using alt+f4, and if I try to open it again then the login prompt opens up again.

My Silverlight version: Silverlight 4 (4.0.50524.0).
I uninstall/reinstall the client. After login, it gives a blank screen. Any fix for this?

To be honest, I find Silverlight wanting. It sure has less vulnerabilities than Flash but in terms of compatibility, there is a lot of work to do to make a serious alternative to Flash. That's just my opinion. funny games

I so appreciate all that Robert said in this interview. It's a portrait of an artist, a soul, clear about the potency and purpose of his work in a world that may not always understand. As a fellow artist I feel validated and strengthened by it. Thanks. fastest weight loss
